Mental Health and Logistics

On Mental Health Day, we’re thinking about those keeping our economy running: courier and trucker drivers. There is still a big stigma surrounding mental health. With the logistics industry being predominantly male, mental health isn’t a topic that gets addressed.

Drivers’ mental health is a topic for all to take interest. Without truck drivers, grocery stores and retailers wouldn’t be able to restock their shelves quick enough. Without courier drivers, lab samples wouldn’t make it to the lab to provide diagnostics to the patients and ensure they receive any necessary treatment.

Because of the nature of the job, drivers are more susceptible to stress and anxiety. Factors include: bumper-to-bumper traffic, bad weather conditions, witnessing wrecks, social isolation, long driving shifts, disrupted sleep patterns.

Try this

Maintain a daily routine: Every day is different in this industry so this may seem challenging. Try waking up at the same time everyday as much as you can. It can also be something small like taking 5 minutes for yourself in the morning to meditate.

Keep your mind active: During your shift, consider listening to music, audiobooks, or podcasts. On a quick break, while loading or standing-by, do a Sudoku or crossword puzzle. This will also help exercise the brain to help boost your memory, improve your concentration and maintain you alert.

Get enough sleep: 8 hours is recommended for most adults. Be mindful of the quality of your sleep. Avoid caffeine late in the day. Set a nightly routine. Limit the use of screens and electronics before bed.

Practice breathing techniques: Deep breathing can help workers feel more centered. It can also improve posture, reduce inflammation, and help you feel calmer and more alert. In between loads, standing-by or at a rest stop, try any of these.

Start a blog or journal: You’re on the road all day, meeting new people, seeing new places, impacting so many industries. Consider documenting your adventures. Taking photos. Jotting down thoughts. It’ll be a chance to share your story and give others with indoor professions to live vicariously through you.

Most importantly, if you need it, get help. There are resources out there like Talk Space that offer virtual therapy.
